Set One (Long Version)

Intro and Prayer

The word gospel means “good news”—the invitation to restored, unhindered fellowship with God through Jesus Christ. This is the message of hope at the heart of the gospel. So don’t just sit back and relax in your comfortable chairs—you’re warmly invited to sing along and join in the worship.

1. Are You Ready for a Miracle featuring Sabrina Weeks

“Are You Ready for a Miracle” was released in 1982 by Patti LaBelle on her first gospel album "The Spirit’s in It,"  produced by Andraé Crouch. The project marked a shift toward gospel while blending in soul and R&B, helping bring gospel music to a broader audience. The song’s central message is one of expectation—calling listeners to have the kind of faith that believes God is still moving and able to do the impossible.

  • Mark 9:23:  “If you can?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”

2. Special Performance by the Good News Brothers

The Good News Brothers consist of two choir members—Paul Murphy as Elwood and Darryl Sterling as Jake. Much like the Blues Brothers from the 1980s movie starring Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi, Paul and Darryl are on a mission from God—but this time, it’s to spread the Gospel.

  • Mark 16:1:  “He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’”

3. Go Tell It On the Mountain featuring the Good News Brothers

The shepherds in the Gospel of Luke were the first to spread the good news after encountering the newborn Christ. “Go, Tell It on the Mountain,” an African American spiritual rooted in oral tradition, echoes that same call to proclaim the message. First published in the early 1900s in a collection of African American folk songs, it has since been sung and recorded by countless gospel and secular artists.

  • Luke 2:17:  “When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.”

  • Luke 2:10–11:  “But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’”

  • Isaiah 52:  “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”

4. Down to the River to Pray

“Down to the River to Pray” has roots in African American spirituals and early American folk hymns, first published in 1867 in Slave Songs of the United States. Spirituals that focus on baptism are relatively rare, which gives this piece a unique place in the tradition. The song reached a wider audience through its inclusion in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, featuring Alison Krauss.

  • Matthew 3:16:  “As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him.”

5. This Little Light of Mine

An African American spiritual that gained popularity in the 1920s, this song carries a powerful message about letting one’s light shine. Its theme echoes the words of Jesus, who said, “No one lights a lamp and hides it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.” And again, “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.”

  • Matthew 5:14–16:  “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

6. Comedy Spot featuring Marnie Smith

  • Proverbs 17:22:  “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”

7. Joyful Joyful featuring Alicia Ambler

This hymn is based on a poem written by Henry van Dyke in 1907 and is set to the beloved “Ode to Joy” melody from the final movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Van Dyke described it as “a hymn of trust and joy and hope,” proclaiming that no earthly revolution can overthrow the Kingdom of Heaven. This arrangement gained renewed popularity when it was featured in the 1993 Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit film.

  • Psalm 100:1–2:  “Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”

  • Philippians 4:4:  “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”

8. I Love the Lord featuring the Lord Lovin' Lady and the Snowths

“I Love the Lord” is a lighthearted parody inspired by the classic “Mahna Mahna” skit from the Muppets. With playful call-and-response and unexpected humour, this piece brings a fun twist to a familiar format while keeping its focus on joyful praise. It’s a reminder that celebrating faith doesn’t always have to be serious—sometimes it can be full of laughter too.

  • Psalm 116:1–2:  “I love the Lord, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call on him as long as I live.”

9. Holy Forever

From Chris Tomlin, released in 2023 as the fourth single from his fourteenth studio album Always, this Grammy-nominated song captures a heartfelt cry: “Lord, I need You—rescue me, I need Your grace.” Tomlin has said, “We need songs of transcendence—songs that take our eyes off ourselves and onto the glory of God.”

  • Revelation 4:8:  “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come.”

  • Isaiah 6:3:  “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory.”

10. Children Go Where I Send Thee

After we’ve been baptized, ”Children, Go Where I Send Thee!”—a traditional African American folk and gospel song performed by many artists, including Peter, Paul and Mary—calls us to go where we are sent. The song weaves together biblical imagery, sending children to different destinations, each with a purpose, emphasizing faith and obedience. It reminds us that “the gospel can come out of the mouths of babes and children.”

  • Matthew 28:19:  “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

  • Hebrews 1:1-2: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…”

11. I Sing Because I'm Happy

Nova Scotia–born Civilla Martin wrote this hymn in 1905; it has since become one of the most recorded gospel hymns of the 20th century.

  • Matthew 10:29–31:  “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."

  • Psalm 16:11:  “You make known to me the path of life; in Your presence there is fullness of joy; at Your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”

2. I'll Fly Away featuring Sabrina Weeks

“I’ll Fly Away” is one of the most cherished gospel hymns of all time, written by Albert E. Brumley in 1929. With its uplifting melody and message of hope, the song looks forward to the day when life’s struggles are left behind and the soul is set free. Joyful and enduring, it has been sung for generations as a celebration of faith, freedom, and the promise of heaven.

  • Revelations 21:4:  “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain…”

3. My Jesus featuring Sabrina Weeks

“My Jesus,” written and performed by Anne Wilson, is a bold and deeply personal declaration of faith. Blending country and contemporary Christian styles, the song introduces listeners to a Savior who meets people in their brokenness, offers forgiveness, and brings lasting hope. With its heartfelt lyrics and conversational tone, “My Jesus” invites everyone to experience the love and grace of Christ for themselves.

  • Matthew 11:28:  “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

4. Comedy Spot with Brandon Denham

  • Ecclesiastes 3:4:  “A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

5. How Great Thou Art featuring Mike Hilliard

“How Great Thou Art” is one of the most beloved hymns of all time, declaring the majesty and power of God through both creation and redemption. Originally based on a Swedish poem by Carl Boberg and later translated into English, the hymn builds from quiet awe to a soaring expression of praise. With its sweeping melody and profound message, it invites listeners to reflect on the greatness of God and respond in worship.

  • Psalm 19:1:  “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.”

6. Wade in the Water

This African American spiritual, first co-published in 1901, is often associated with songs of the Underground Railroad. It draws imagery from the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem, where a great multitude of the sick gathered, believing that when the waters were stirred, the first to enter would be healed. The song also echoes the crossing of the Red Sea, symbolizing deliverance through troubled waters. Within the “troubled” waters of life, there is hope and healing, for God is present in the midst of the storm.

  • John 5:7-7:  “‘Sir,’ the invalid replied, ‘I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.’ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’ At once the man was cured…”

7. My God Is Good featuring Reverend Steve Thunder, Paul Murphy and Trudy Baye

Karen Crane is a songwriter who has been creating music from a young age, including songs for a children’s Christian television program. With a background in contemporary Christian music, she now focuses on composing sacred choral works for singers of all ages. This arrangement was created in 2023.

  • Psalm 100:5:  “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.”

8. Special Performance by Reverend Steve Thunder

  • Psalm 29:3:  “The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.”

9. Praise featuring Tobi Jensen

“Praise,” recorded by Elevation Worship, is an energetic anthem that calls believers to worship God in every season—through victories and struggles alike. With driving rhythm and bold, declarative lyrics, the song emphasizes that praise is not based on circumstances but is a constant response to who God is. It invites everyone to lift their voice with confidence, declaring faith, gratitude, and trust.

  • Psalm 150:6:   "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord".
